CM Punk and Colt Cabana had been best friends for years, but that all changed when their friendship fell apart after Punk’s appearance on Cabana’s “Art of Wrestling” podcast in November of 2014, leading to them being sued by WWE doctor Chris Amann due to Punk’s comments.

Around this time, there had been a rumor that the rift started between them after Cabana went to a WWE event. After that lawsuit, Cabana filed a lawsuit against Punk, claiming that Punk had not kept his promise of covering his legal bills during the suit from the WWE doctor. Punk countersued Cabana. Both lawsuits were later dismissed.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer clarified that it wasn’t Cabana going to a WWE event that started the rift. It was him getting pizza with PAC (Neville at the time), Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn while Punk and Cabana were being sued.

“Okay, so the show on Monday when we were talking about the irony of the Punk thing and the thing that started all of this, which was when Punk and Cabana had their falling out when Cabana going to the show. Anyways, I’ve been told that the story is essentially correct, but it wasn't…Cabana didn’t go to a WWE show. He actually went out for pizza with Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, and PAC a couple of years ago and that’s what caused the start of everything basically because he [Punk] felt that they shouldn’t have contact with anyone in WWE because of the lawsuit. Caban went for pizza with guys he’s known on the independent scene for years and years and was good friends with," Meltzer stated.
