CM Punk's comments on AEW business model will likely irk fans

On Monday, CM Punk gave a bombshell interview with Ariel Helwani on "The MMA Hour." The WWE superstar covered a wide range of topics. Yet, it's his comments regarding AEW's business model that will likely irk the wrestling community.

"Their business — and I know a lot of people are going to be upset — its not a real business," Punk said. "It's not about selling tickets, it's not about drawing money, it's not about making money, it's just not. I don't know. I think just having good matches, maybe? And there's nothing wrong with that."

Punk's comments fit the primary criticism of AEW. Tony Khan's company has struggled to sell tickets over the past 18 months. Many fans believe their struggles are due to a lack of storylines and an inability to build up their stars. Even with Punk on the roster, AEW talent reportedly performed in front of half-full arenas.

AEW's selling point has always been based on its in-ring product. They're a company that focuses on selling fantastic wrestling matches. However, the wider wrestling fanbase is used to having compelling storylines, which is where the company has been falling short. It's also why WWE continues to thrive.

Punk left AEW in a cloud of controversy. His tenure with WWE has already hit a snag due to a torn triceps at Royal Rumble. Nevertheless, Punk knows what it's like to work for both companies. He clearly has his opinion on what he prefers regarding what a business is focused on.

WWE will likely dominate social media in the coming days as the build-up to WrestleMania reaches a fever pitch. Unfortunately, Punk won't be in the ring. He will, however, be a guest commentator for the World Heavyweight Championship bout between Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre.

Interestingly, he has storylines with both of those competitors pending. Because that's what WWE excels at. And that's what the casual fanbase craves.
