Aces Select Dyaisha Fair With 16th Pick in 2024 WNBA Draft
David Yeazell-USA TODAY Sports

With the 16th pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the Las Vegas Aces selected Dyaisha Fair out of Syracuse University.

Dyaisha Fair was nominated for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award three years in a row with Buffalo but never won it.

Two years later, the 22-year-old point guard heard her name called at the 2024 WNBA Draft — and Becky Hammon was behind the pick.

Fair described it as a ‘full-circle moment.’

“For me to have not received it, and now to be drafted by her when the time was right has been a full-circle moment, so I’m ready to go,” she said, according to CNY Central.

Fair is the sixth Syracuse player to be drafted into the WNBA. It was the perfect way to end an incredible two-year stint with the Orange.

During that time, she became the fastest player to score 1,000 points in SU history (50 games) and set a new career scoring average record with 21.0 points per game (65 games).

She also holds the team record for most three-pointers made in a game (9).

Dyaisha Fair Finds Her ‘Perfect Situation’

The Fair-Hammon connection is neat, but there’s also the Fair-Plum connection.

Not only are they both undersized guards — Fair at 5-foot-5 and Plum at 5-foot-8 — but Fair finished her collegiate career with 3,403 total points. That puts her at No. 3 in Division I women’s basketball history.

Can you guess who’s No. 2?

Kelsey Plum at 3,527 points. Caitlin Clark, of course, is No. 1 at 3,951 points.

“To know that I’m going to such a special team with quite a few veterans means a lot,” she said, according to CNY Central.

“It’s like a perfect situation that I’m coming in to learn, and there’s a lot to learn from. So to walk into this situation is kind of perfect for me.”

And let’s not forget about Hammon, who was 5-foot-6 during her playing days and scored 2,740 points in 125 games.

“No matter what anyone says, and what anyone may think specifically regarding my height, I’m here,” Fair said after the draft. “Watch me work.”

Fair’s Journey From High School to the WNBA

Fair’s height certainly hasn’t gotten in the way up to this point.

She averaged 33.5 points, 10 rebounds, and eight assists per game as a senior at Edison Tech High School in 2018-19.

“She’s the best player I’ve ever seen play,” Edison Tech head coach Jack Palmeri said, according to WHEC.

“She has done the same at every level she’s been at. She’s played to that level and she’s just getting better and better and I can’t wait to see her at this next level.”

After averaging 23.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2.5 steals per game at Buffalo (2019-22), she went on to average 21.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.4 steals in two seasons at Syracuse.

She finished the 2023-24 season with the second-most three-pointers made (115), eighth-most points per game (22.3), and ninth-most total points (712).

And led the Orange to an NCAA Tournament win.

More recently, she scored 19 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and had the winning basket at the 2024 Women’s College All-Star Game.

Aces’ general manager Natalie Williams sure is excited to have her.

“We’re very comfortable drafting Dyaisha,” she said. “We know what she can do. Her stats don’t lie.”

Fair Ready to Get to Work

Dyaisha Fair could be one of the biggest steals of the 2024 WNBA Draft. She can shoot, she uses her angles to create space, and she’s always looking for a steal of her own.

She’s everything the Las Vegas Aces are looking for.

And it won’t be long before she gets to prove her value.

Training camp starts April 28 and the Aces will have two weeks to set their final roster. Those rosters are due on May 13 — they day before Opening Night.

Fair has a pretty good shot at making the team as they continue their search for a backup point guard.

It’s up for grabs — all she has to do is grab it.
