Who is Inter’s new signing Tajon Buchanan?

Tajon Buchanan is expected to complete his medical with Inter over the next few days and be available for Simone Inzaghi for the first game of the year against Hellas Verona: find out who the Canada international is and what he can offer to the Nerazzurri.

Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio quickly secured the services of Buchanan in the January transfer window as Manchester City had also set their sights on the 24-year-old from Canada, reports in Italy claimed.

Born in Brampton, Ontario, on February 8, 1999, Buchanan started playing football at Brampton Youth SC before joining Mississauga Falcons and Real Colorado.

He also played for Syracuse, Sigma FC and New England, and in January 2022, he moved to Europe for the first time, signing for Belgian side Club Brugge.

Buchanan has covered many positions in his career, especially on the right and left wing and it’s no surprise to read on Italian media that Inter see him as the next Ivan Perisic.

Buchanan mainly plays on the opposite flank, on the right-hand side of the pitch, but just like the Croatian star, he started his career as an attacking winger, but at Inter, he will have defensive duties as a right wing-back.

The 24-year-old has been drafted in to replace the injured Juan Cuadrado who will remain out of action for at least three months following Achilles surgery.

Buchanan made his senior Canada debut in June 2021 and has scored four goals in 35 appearances with his national team. He was part of the 2022 World Cup squad and started all three group-stage games against Belgium, Croatia and Morocco.

What Inter fans can surely expect from their new signing is pace and intensity as the 24-year-old reached a top speed of 35.71 km/h in a 2022-23 Champions League game with Club Brugge.

His three goals and four assists in 20 appearances this season also suggest Buchanan can give his contribution in the final third and if he will settle in quickly at San Siro, he may allow the Nerazzurri to sell Denzel Dumfries at the end of the season and become the regular starter on the right flank in 2024-25.
