Ibrahima Konate has lifted the lid on the comparison between Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and his France team-mate Dayot Upamecano.

Van Dijk, who moved to Anfield in 2018 from Southampton is regarded as one of the best central defenders in the world.

The 31-year-old has racked up 212 appearances for the Reds, scored 19 goals, and provided 12 assists across all competitions.

He has helped Jurgen Klopp's side win every single trophy available including the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, Carabao Cup as well as the Community Shield earlier this season.

Konate, speaking in an interview with Eurosport France said his club teammate Van Dijk has an aura when he is on the pitch and is an exceptional talent.

“What kind of question is that? You can't compare the two," the 23-year-old said.

“With Upamecano, we are in the same category even if he is a very high competitor.

"But Van Dijk, I put him on a different planet.

“We're still a long way from achieving what he did. Although we will get there one day, I have no doubt.”

The France international added, “Leadership, he has such an ease in defending on certain players."

“He has his own technique, it's incredible. His determination, his drive... He has an aura on the pitch, you always feel it.

“It's an exceptional chance to play with him. But I also have to look at my career and not look at him as a fan all the time.”
