AS Roma have taken a big step towards planning for their future on the day of their Europa League quarter-final second leg against AC Milan, a report claims.

De Rossi took over from José Mourinho in January, who was sacked after Roma lost 3-1 at the San Siro against Milan. He has taken charge of 16 games so far, with 11 wins, three draws and two defeats.

Those two defeats came against the runaway league leaders Inter and against Brighton in the second leg of the Europa League last 16, when they had already won the first leg 4-0 at home.

Fabrizio Romano is now reporting that Roma have ‘decided to extend the contract of De Rossi’ as the club owners – the Friedkin family – have now confirmed. The former club captain will sign new deal in the next days after initially signed short term contract valid until June.

Roma decided to confirm De Rossi because he has done ‘an excellent job’ in what was initially an interim role, and now he will lead the team into next season and – they hope – into the Europa League semis.

Tonight’s game will hopefully be a different story from a Milan perspective, but in the first leg there were certainly some tactical moves by the Giallorossi that caused problems and brought the seven-game winning run to an end.
