Roma couldn’t strike a deal to onboard Marcos Leonardo this summer, but their interest hasn’t waned, and they’ll try again in the future. The Giallorossi bounced back nicely, adding Romelu Lukaku and Sardar Azmoun to round out their frontline, although on loan.

Director Tiago Pinto discussed the Brazilian talent in a wide-ranging presser where he took stock of the transfer window.

“We have been following him for 15/16 months. The agreement between the parties was at a good point. Within a couple of months, a historic club like Santos was dragged into the relegation race, fired its director, changed its coach, and sold two 17-year-old players for €30M. The situation got complicated and started to become a matter of politics. We are sorry for the turn of events, but he remains an objective.”

According to Il Messaggero, Roma will face more competition for Marcos Leonardo in January. Manchester United could outbid their latest offer, €20M plus €5M add-ons. The Giallorossi hope the starlet doesn’t renege on his word, as he wanted to join. However, the lure of the Premier League could sway him.

The 20-year-old has scored 16 goals and provided 4 assists in 34 appearances this season.
