Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis could have a pivotal role to play for the European champions against Real Madrid tomorrow evening. Kyle Walker, Nathan Ake, and Josko Gvardiol are all in doubt for the game, so Lewis may be required to step up in the biggest game of his fledgling career.

There is no doubt if called upon by Pep Guardiola that Rico Lewis is capable of playing against Real Madrid. Since making his first team debut with the world champions last season, he has shown his immense value to Manchester City. He has routinely played arguably the most difficult role in Pep Guardiola’s system. Lewis has also shone in the role, showcasing his undoubted ability and potential. During the early stages of his career, no lights have appeared to be too bright for the City academy graduate. He has also proven his pedigree in the Champions League. He put in a man-of-the-match display in Manchester City’s 3-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena in the group stage of this year’s competition.

The lights don’t get much brighter than a UEFA Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu. With a trio of Manchester City defenders in doubt, it would appear that Rico Lewis will have a crucial role to play for Pep Guardiola. Whether he lines up at left or right back, Lewis will have a critical role to play for the European champions against Real Madrid.

With his ability to play at full-back and drift into midfield, Rico Lewis may be a crucial component of Pep Guardiola’s set up against Carlo Ancelotti’s side. With his ability to support Rodri or drift forward, he could provide the necessary support for City’s midfield general. Defensively, he will have a vital duty to perform. The England international is likely to face off against Vinicius Junior or Rodrygo on either flank. If Lewis can contain either, it could go a long way in helping City leave Madrid with a positive result.

As it stands, Rico Lewis will likely be a critical component of Pep Guardiola’s plans for tomorrow’s match. Coming off an impressive display against Crystal Palace, the youngster looks ready for the bright lights of the Bernabeu. He has shown that he has the temperament to shine on the big stage. It would be no surprise to see him do it again against the 14-time European champions.
