Rico Lewis best position in the future may be as an attacking midfielder. That’s the opinion of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola who also believes the youngster would be considered one of the best young talents if he was more physically imposing.

Speaking with TNT Sports before City’s 3-nil victory over Young Boys the City manager was asked about Lewis. Pep Guardiola was full of praise for the youngster and what he brings to the European champions squad. He said: “Rico helps us do some incredible movements we’ve never seen before. Smart, intelligent player.”

The City boss also believes that in time Rico Lewis will become an attacking midfielder for Manchester City. Pep added: “I think his position will be attacking midfielder but for now we have a lot of intelligent players there. With him inside, we always had the opportunity to make our process and our game much, much better. Fantastic player, at this early age, he settled really quick and played really good.”

It is high praise from arguably the world’s best manager for the City Academy graduate. Lewis burst into the City first-team set-up last season. It shows just how good a player Lewis is that he fulfils an important role for the European champions squad despite his young age.

The performance of Rico Lewis against RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena in a 3-1 City win highlights Guardiola’s belief. Lewis was man-of-the-match playing a more advanced role in midfield in a crucial victory for the European champion. It was a breathtaking display from a player so young in a crucial game.

The youngster has time on his side to develop his game to become a midfielder. But based on the quality he’s shown already, Lewis playing as an attacking midfielder would come as no surprise.
