Zaniolo and Tonali, who play for Aston Villa and Newcastle, faced questioning from Italian officials in regard to “an investigation into illegal digital betting platforms.” Both players have left Italy’s training camp after speaking to Police.
A statement from the Italian Football Federation confirms that Zaniolo and Tonali will return to their clubs and not take part in the upcoming matches. The Athletic reports that while gambling is not a criminal offence in Italy, it must only be done on sites that are licensed by the Customs and Monopolies departments.
Zaniolo and Tonali are not the only players – that authorities allege are involved in the betting breach. Romano tweeted on Friday that Juventus player Nicolo Fagioli was also a player of interest. The journalist reported that Fagioli’s club, upon receiving news of the alleged involvement of their player, “immediately and promptly contacted the FIGC Federal Prosecutor’s Office”.
Winners of the 2020 European Championship, Italy look like they could possibly fail to qualify for the finals this year. Gli Azzurri, winners of four FIFA World Cups, are currently second in Group C behind the Three Lions. Stalking them are Ukraine and North Macedonia. The loss of Zaniolo and Tonali could cost the squad dearly.
Italy boss Luciano Spalleti has “vowed his support” to Zaniolo and Tonali through the investigation. The coach described it as a “rough night” for the team. Torino player Samuele Ricci and AS Roma’s Stephan El-Shaarway have been called up to the squad.
