Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo admits that the Partenopei are now staring down a sizable gap from Inter Milan in the Serie A table.

The 29-year-old spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInter1908, after the Nerazzurri won emphatically at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona yesterday.

For Inter, yesterday’s result was a perfect way to make a statement in the Serie A title race.

But for Napoli, it was just further doubt that they are in the race at all.

Naturally this is disappointing for the team who won the Serie A title last season.

Not only did Napoli win the title for the first time in 33 years last season. They did so by a massive margin, with seventeen points separating them from second place Lazio in the end.

The margin at the top showed just how superior the Partenopei had been to the rest of the Italian top flight last time around.

But now it’s a completely different picture.

Napoli are now looking upwards at a double-digit deficit rather than down.

And captain Di Lorenzo doesn’t hide that this makes it difficult to even think about title talk.

Napoli Captain Di Lorenzo Admits Massive Gap From Inter Makes Serie A Title Talk Difficult

The reigning Italian champions are now level on points with Roma.

Milan sit five points ahead of them, whilst Juventus are already nine points clear. But it is Inter who are now more than ten points clear of Napoli.

“We’re not happy with the way the result went,” Partenopei  captain Di Lorenzo said after the match.

“There’s disappointment in the dressing room.”

“The result sends a clear message. But on the other hand we put in a good performance, we’re back to playing good footbal.”

Di Lorenzo stressed that “What matters is the result. And we’re not happy, we’re not taking points here at home and we’re sorry for that.”

He said that “The gap is massive now. So it’s useless to talk about the title.”

“But we just have to take it one match at a time,” the Napoli captain said.
