Defensive star rejects Atletico Madrid contract renewal as exit nears

Atletico Madrid are planning changes ahead of the 2024/25 season and Mario Hermoso could be one of the first players to leave.

Diego Simeone will have a transfer budget to work with in the coming months which should be bolstered by UEFA Champions League qualification.

The club will not solidify their plans until the financial injection of Champions League football is sealed.

However, one of Simeone’s first tasks will be to assess his position on three defenders, including Hermoso.

The first two are expected to be routine, with Gabriel Paulista moving on after a short term stint in Madrid, as Axel Witsel extends his deal.

As per the latest from Mundo Deportivo, Hermoso has not reached an agreement on a new contract, and will now depart the club next month.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a switch to Italy but he could also be offered a La Liga stay by one of Atletico’s rivals.
