With Lewis Ferguson ruled out for six months by knee surgery, Bologna are turning to Venezia and USMNT midfielder Tenner Tessmann.
Scotland international Ferguson has been a key figure in the Rossoblu this season and had attracted huge offers from the likes of Juventus.
However, a torn anterior cruciate ligament effectively ends that speculation and also means Bologna need a replacement if they are to be in Europe next term.
According to Calciomercato.com, their primary target is another English speaker, 22-year-old American Tessmann.
He has been in Italy since 2021 when making the move to Venezia, who are currently battling for promotion from Serie B.
Tessmann made 33 Serie B appearances so far this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists, and would fit the bill for Bologna.
His contract only runs to June 2025, so a deal can be done at a good price of circa €6m.
Much could depend on whether the Lagunari can earn promotion to Serie A.
