Growing up in Copaigue, New York, a neighborhood friend was into the Islanders and loved Darius Kasparaitis. And, because he was a little older than me, I thought that was really cool, so of course I started to love “Kaspar,” too. Over the years, we’ve kept in touch and we always have a laugh about our favorite player when something pops up. I just hope one day he sells me his mid-90s fisherman jersey with Kasparaitis cascading across the shoulders. What a beautiful sight… Anyway, why am I telling this story? The other day was the anniversary of Kaspar’s overtime game seven winner against the Buffalo Sabres in the 2001 Stanley Cup Playoffs as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. As I shared the link on Twitter with my childhood friend, I thought about putting together a top-five (video recorded) hits of Darius Kasparaitis as an Islander.
