The San Jose Sharks have selected Sudbury Wolves forward Quentin Musty with the No. 26 overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft.

The Hamburg, New York, product was selected first overall at the 2021 OHL Draft. He knows a thing or two about pressure. During his OHL rookie campaign, he scored 31 points in 50 games. This past season with the Wolves, he notched a team-leading 52 assists and 78 points in 53 games. Musty missed a dozen games in January and February due to an injury and a coaching change, which knocked him out of the CHL/NHL Top Prospect’s Game. However, Musty did represent the United States at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, where he tallied five points in four games.

Musty is a creative playmaker who’s very good at creating space and finding the right place for his shot. Once he gets his power stride up to speed, he is a dangerous threat.

“Musty is always thinking offense, and his compete level is near the top of the class,” Daily Faceoff senior prospects analyst Steven Ellis. “It bothers him when he gets stopped on a chance and he tries even harder the next time. Musty has a good release and skates well enough, but I’d like to see him use his strength more to his advantage to dominate shifts like he used to at the U-16 level.”

Musty will join a prospect pipeline that features the likes of Will Smith, William Eklund, Ethan Cardwell and more. The Sharks used their 2022 first-round selection on Swedish forward Filip Bystedt, taking him No. 27 overall. Musty will return to the OHL for his third season with the Wolves for 2023-24.

The Sharks will make their next selection No. 36 overall in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft, which gets underway Thursday.
