Sabres' Mattias Samuelsson, Henri Jokiharju out week-to-week with injuries

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Mattias Samuelsson will be out for the next few weeks after suffering a lower-body injury.

There’s no exact timeline for his return right now, but surgery will not be needed.

Samuelsson was injured during an awkward collision with Curtis Lazar on Saturday, forcing him to miss Buffalo’s game against Seattle on Tuesday.

More of a defensive defender, Samuelsson has yet to record a point through fives games this season while averaging 19:36 in ice time per game.

Samuelsson signed a seven-year extension with the club earlier this month, raising eyebrows after not playing an entire season of NHL hockey. The club views him as a stay-at-home option to offset the more two-way play of Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power, so losing him for a few weeks will be a tough blow.

The club also confirmed that Henri Jokiharju will be week-to-week with a fracture. Jokiharju hasn’t played since getting injured last Thursday in Calgary.

The Sabres are off to a 4-2 start this season, giving them some staying power in the tight Atlantic Division race early on.
