It looks like Chris Drury and the New York Rangers read what I wrote earlier this week when I wrote that they need to find a way to keep goaltender Jonathan Quick beyond this season. Today (Sunday, March 3), the Blueshirts announced that they had agreed to terms with Quick, 38, on a one-year contract extension. The deal is worth a very team-friendly $1.275 million.

This is another great move for Drury. For starters, Quick has far exceeded everyone’s expectations this season. As of this writing, Quick is 13-5-0-2 with a 2.45 goals-against average, a .916 save percentage, and two shutouts. For someone who struggled statistically last season, these numbers are simply outstanding. Speaking of outstanding, his ranks among the league’s top goaltenders this season are something to marvel at. Just take a look at these eye-opening ranks:

  • Tied for sixth-best goals-against average (2.45)
  • Sixth-best save percentage (.916)
  • Tied for twelfth in shutouts (Two)

Quick has also done a great job keeping this team rolling while their starter, Igor Shesterkin, was either injured or struggling. When Shesterkin, 28, was not on top of his game, Quick was brilliant and because of that, the Rangers are one of the best teams in the league this season. Lastly, Quick is very well-liked by his teammates. They play hard for him, he is a good mentor to them, and just a few weeks ago, Peter Baugh of The Athletic wrote that Quick came up big when Blake Wheeler got injured as he took Wheeler’s son Louie to the team’s MetLife Family Skate. This is a great move by the team. Not only do the Rangers go into next season with their goaltending tandem in place, but now Quick can focus on being as ready as possible for this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs should something happen, whether it is an injury or his struggles to return, to Shesterkin.
