Oilers’ Connor McDavid becomes fifth fastest player to hit 800 points

It was during the first period when McDavid hit the 800-point mark by picking up an assist against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.  

McDavid would record his 43rd goal of the season later on during the third period to put the Oilers up 3-2, he would then pick up an empty net goal for his second of the night and 44th goal of the season. McDavid finished the night with two goals and one assist. 

The 26-year-old became the fifth fastest player to reach the 800-point milestone, McDavid notched 800 points (283 goals, 519 assists) in 545 games played. He trails Peter Stastny at 531, Mike Bossy at 525, Mario Lemieux at 410 and Wayne Gretzky at 352 games. 

However, McDavid will take the number one spot among active players, he surpasses Patrick Kane at 786, Steven Stamkos at 779, Evgeni Malkin at 680, Alex Ovechkin at 658 and Sidney Crosby at 571 games. 

To further add to his achievement, he’s one of the only NHL players in history to reach the 800-point milestone before turning 27. He joins the likes of Steve Yzerman, Denis Savard, Bryan Trottier, Bobby Orr, Dale Hawerchuk, Jaromir Jagr and of course Lemieux and Gretzky. 

This season, McDavid has registered 44 goals and 61 assists for 105 points in just 58 games. The Richmond Hill product is on pace for 146 points according to Elite Prospects. 

Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl also reached a milestone Tuesday night. The Germany product notched his 700th career NHL point. Draisaitl has 34 goals and 51 assists for 85 points in 56 games this season.
