NHL futures: Can anyone catch Connor Bedard in the Calder Trophy odds?

You don't have to be a fan of the Chicago Blackhawks to know that Connor Bedard is having a very good rookie season. The first overall pick from the 2023 NHL Draft is living up to the hype in his first season of professional hockey and, as such, continues to the be favorite at sportsbooks to win the Calder Trophy -- the NHL's Rookie of the Year award -- after his 2023-24 campaign.

Of course, Bedard isn't the only rookie gracing an NHL roster this season. In fact, he is part of a stacked freshman class that is making an impact on the season. Nevertheless, Bedard is the far and away -250 favorite at DraftKings to win the Calder Trophy.

Can any of the other rookies catch up to Bedard and change oddsmakers' minds? Here's a look at Bedard's biggest competition to win the Calder Trophy.

While Bedard currently leads all rookies in goals (11) and overall points (20), Minnesota Wild center Marco Rossi is right on his heels. The Austrian center is Calder-eligible despite being drafted in 2020 and having a handful of pro games under his belt heading into this season, and that experience has helped him notch eight goals and 14 overall points. Rossi is currently a 25-1 long shot to win the Calder Trophy, but if he continues to produce at his current pace -- he scored two goals against Bedard's Blackhawks over the weekend -- we could see his odds getting shorter.

Rossi's Wild teammate Brock Faber is also competition for Bedard in the latest Calder odds. While not the scoring juggernaut that Rossi is, the defenseman -- also selected by Minnesota in the 2020 Draft -- leads all rookies in plus-minus with a plus-7. Faber is listed at 22-1 to win the Calder and could be the third blueliner in five years to win the award if he ends his season on a higher note than Bedard.

Of course, you can't talk about rookie defensemen without talking about Luke Hughes. The youngest of the hockey brother trio is second among rookies in assists (11) and total points (14) and is appropriately listed at 10-1 to win the Calder. While the New Jersey Devils have been inconsistent to start the season, Hughes continues to impress with four points tallied over his last five games.

A goalie hasn't won the Calder since Steve Mason in 2009, but that won't stop Samuel Ersson or Joseph Woll from battling Bedard for rookie honors. Flyers netminder Ersson currently leads the pack with a 2.78 goals-against average and one shutout, while Woll has eight wins a .915 save percentage to kick off his first season starting for the Maple Leafs. Woll is a 30-1 long shot to win the Calders while odds for Ersson are not listed at DK, but the two are definitely worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.

It may seem like all of these contenders have a long road ahead of them to catch up to Bedard in the Calder Trophy odds. But since the season is only two months old, there are still plenty of opportunities for one of these competitors to catch up to him. Will one of them seize the day, or will Bedard run away with the NHL's rookie honors? We'll have to wait and see.
