Lightning goaltender Jonas Johansson day-to-day with lower-body injury
Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Jonas Johansson won’t dress for Monday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings as he deals with a lower-body injury.

The Lightning confirmed on Monday that Johansson is considered day-to-day, with head coach Jon Cooper telling reporters that the injury is not expected to sideline the goaltender on a long-term basis.

With Johansson unavailable against the Red Wings, the Lightning are expected to bring in former Grand Valley State University goaltender Kyle Konin to serve as the emergency back-up goaltender behind Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Konin, 26, hails from Rhode Island but currently lives in St. Petersburg and has served as a standby EBUG in Tampa for years, previously suiting up with the St. Louis Blues for a game against the Lightning back in 2021.

Johansson, 28, has appeared in a career-high 26 games with the Lightning this season, posting a 12-7-5 record, two shutouts, and an .890 save percentage. The 6’5″ Swede is under contract through the end of the 2024–25 season at a $775,000 NHL cap hit.

The Buffalo Sabres originally selected Johansson in the third round (No. 61 overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft. After spending his first three post-draft seasons in the Brynäs IF system in Sweden, Johansson arrived in North America in 2017.

Johansson appeared in 13 games with the Sabres over the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons, going 1-8-2 with an .888 save percentage. The Sabres moved him to the Colorado Avalanche ahead of the 2021 trade deadline in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

In parts of three seasons with the Avalanche, Johansson went 10-3-2 with one shutout and a .904 save percentage. He also appeared in two games with the Florida Panthers in a brief stint after being claimed off waivers, posting an 0-2-0 record and a .766 save percentage.

Johansson is one of four goaltenders currently under contract with the Lightning, the others being Vasilevskiy, Hugo Alnefelt, and Matt Tomkins. The 22-year-old Alnefelt has progressed well with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch, going 31-19-6 with five shutouts and a .903 save percentage over the last two seasons, and could succeed Johansson as Vasilevskiy’s back-up in the long run.

The Lightning are currently riding a nine-game point streak and will look to extend that to 10 when they hit the ice against the Detroit Red Wings at Amalie Arena in Tampa on Monday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
