Hurricanes provide a bleak update on injured forward

Carolina Hurricanes skilled forward Teuvo Teravainen suffered a broken left hand in Wednesday's Game 2 overtime win over the New York Islanders. Initially expected to miss at least the rest of the opening round, Teravainen may be out of action much longer.

When asked by reporters Thursday about Teravainen possibly returning at some point in the postseason, head coach Rod Brind'Amour responded, "Very, very doubtful."

Brind'Amour also confirmed that Teravainen's injury would require surgery.

Teravainen sustained the break on a slash from Islanders' J.G. Pageau that went uncalled by officials. After the game, Brind'Amour said he was "A little pissed" over the incident, bewildered that the slash went uncalled and that it led to such a severe injury.

The 28-year-old is coming off a down year, tallying 12 goals and 25 assists over 68 games. However, Teravainen has proven valuable in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Hurricanes. His 16 postseason goals rank fourth in franchise history, behind only Eric Staal and Sebastian Aho (19), Brind'Amour (18) and Kevin Dineen (17).

Thanks to Jesper Fast's OT heroics, the Hurricanes own a 2-0 advantage over the Islanders as the series shifts to New York. But it's likely to be a tough road ahead for Carolina as injuries are beginning to pile up. Already without defenseman Jake Gardiner, Teravainen is the fourth forward to hit the shelf, joining Ondrej Kase, Max Pacioretty and Andrei Svechnikov.
