Flames' Mikael Backlund fined $5,000 for cross-checking Flyers' Travis Konecny

Near the halfway point of the first period of Tuesday's game between the Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers that Philadelphia won 2-1 in overtime, Flames forward Mikael Backlund delivered a nasty cheap shot to Flyers forward Travis Konecny:

That crime will cost Backlund some cash.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Wednesday that Backlund has been fined $5,000 for cross-checking Konecny. That is the maximum allowable financial punishment under the collective bargaining agreement.

As in all instances, the fine money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Per Aaron Vickers of DailyHive, Konecny did not suffer an injury on the play, which likely helped Backlund avoid a suspension for boarding. Backlund was assessed a minor penalty for boarding shortly after the incident.

Earlier on Wednesday, Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher was fined $2,500 for delivering a sucker punch to New York Rangers forward Barclay Goodrow.

The Flames next play at the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. That same night, the Flyers host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
