Elias Pettersson vs. William Nylander: Who has helped their value the most?
Vancouver Canucks forward Elias Pettersson. Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli discussed whether William Nylander or Elias Pettersson upped their value more in free agency on the latest episode of "Daily Faceoff Live."

Tyler Yaremchuk: There are a couple of players we talked about over the last week because extensions are a big topic of conversation right now. William Nylander and Elias Pettersson, when you look at what you thought could be their extension prices and cap hit at the start of the season compared to what they could be looking at now. Which one of these two stars has made the most money at this point in the season?

Frank Seravalli: It’s a great question and one that I’ve thought a lot about. And I think if you’re talking total dollars, we’re operating under the assumption that it’s going to be an eight-year deal, it’s probably Nylander. I think Nylander has taken himself from the $10M range to the $11.5M-12M range. It’s probably somewhere between $12-18 million that he’s put in his pocket as a result of this.

Pettersson was someone that people expected him to try to get to that next level after a 100-point season last year and he’s done that. He’s done it at the same time as everyone else in Vancouver which has been really fun to watch. But I think the gap between where Pettersson was and where he is now probably isn’t quite as big as Nylander.

Tyler Yaremchuk: I try to look at this as, if Nylander had a bad season this year, he still would have been a pending UFA going to open market and probably would have gotten the bag somewhere even if it wasn’t in Toronto. When I look at Pettersson, if he had come out and had a bad season in the 60-70 point mark he might not have gotten a long-term deal, it might have been a bridge deal situation. Now he should be a slam-dunk to get that long-term contract with the Canucks. I think the answer to this question is very clearly Pettersson.
