Edmonton Oilers place Calvin Pickard, Phil Kemp, Cam Dineen, and Brad Malone on waivers

Pickard’s placement on waivers doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, as Jack Campbell and Stuart Skinner are set to guard the posts for another year of Oilers hockey. Pickard was put on display for the second preseason game of the year against the Winnipeg Jets. The netminder allowed the Jets to score five goals posting a .833 save percentage to earn themselves a 5-0 win over the Oilers. The 31-year-old was recalled last year, but never made it to the crease. He displayed a quality season with the Condors last year in 2022-23 with a record of 23-12-2 and a .912 save percentage.

Kemp, 24, developed an offensive output last season with the Condors adding to his already established role as a shut-down blueliner recording six goals and 21 points throughout his second campaign with the team. He has yet to play in a regular season contest in the NHL, but did play throughout four preseason games ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. The blueliner played things fairly safe with no points and a positive one plus/minus throughout 13:20 of average ice time.

Dineen also displays high offensive skills for a defenceman scoring six goals and 47 points throughout the 2022-23 campaign he split between the Tuscon Roadrunners and the Condors. The 25-year-old played two preseason games with the Oilers totalling 19:12 of average ice time, however, Dineen is still looking to find his ‘bite’ in the NHL, and will most likely end up on the Condors again for the upcoming season.

Malone, 34, has had his fair share in and out of the NHL, last season he made 10 appearances for the Oilers but remained pointless throughout. He gained more confidence with the Condors with the ‘C’ on his chest scoring four goals and 21 points throughout 41 games. Malone saw one goal in his three preseason appearances before being placed on waivers. The forward has been counted on in the past as a player who can be counted on in the place of an injury as he holds 217 games of NHL experience.

The Oilers have concluded their preseason with a 3-1 win over the Seattle Kraken on Friday night and will now be looking towards shaving down their numbers as they gear up for their first game of regular season action on October 11th against the Vancouver Canucks.
