Arizona Coyotes forward Andrew Ladd will spend the 2022–23 season on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) while dealing with a knee injury, PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reported Thursday.

Ladd, 36, scored seven goals and 12 points in 56 games with the Coyotes in 2021–22. He is entering the final season of the seven-year, $38.5 million deal he signed with the New York Islanders in 2016.

The Coyotes originally acquired Ladd from the Islanders in July 2021. To offload the final two years of Ladd’s contract, the Islanders sent the Coyotes two second-round picks — one used on Janis Moser, the other traded to San Jose to move up and select Conor Geekie — and a conditional 2023 third-round pick.

With Ladd slated to spend the 2022–23 season on LTIR, the Coyotes should receive the conditional 2023 pick from the Islanders. Here are the terms of that condition:

The pick is transferred to Arizona if Ladd:
1. Does not play in any professional games in 2022-23 while under his current contract, and
2. Does not retire prior to the conclusion of the 2022-23 regular season

Assuming Ladd remains on LTIR and does not retire before the end of the coming season, the Coyotes will receive the Islanders’ 2023 third-round draft choice.

Including the Islanders’ pick, the Coyotes own five selections in the first three rounds of the 2023 draft and 19 picks in the first three rounds of the next three drafts.

The Carolina Hurricanes originally selected Ladd with the No. 4 pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. The Maple Ridge, BC product won the Stanley Cup as a rookie with the Hurricanes in 2006 and won it again as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

Ladd served as the first team captain in the history of the revived Winnipeg Jets from 2011-16 before rejoining the Blackhawks at the 2016 trade deadline. He joined the Islanders as a UFA that summer but only played two full seasons with the team.

In 1,001 career NHL regular-season games with Carolina, Chicago, Atlanta, Winnipeg, New York and Arizona, Ladd scored 256 goals and 550 points. He has nine goals and 18 points in 65 career playoff games.
