Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon sees season-long home point streak end at 35 games
? Isaiah J. Downing

Unfortunately for Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon, a chance to get in the history books has come to an end.

With the Avs losing 3-2 in a shootout to the New York Rangers on Thursday, MacKinnon saw his 35-game home point streak come to an end.

While the Avs got two goals in the loss, MacKinnon did not register a point on either goal. Casey Mittelstadt scored the game-opener in the second period, with assists from Brandon Duhaime and Josh Manson, while Devon Toews scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 2-2 midway through the third period.

With Colorado not scoring for the remainder of regulation and all five minutes of overtime, MacKinnon didn’t end up getting the point he needed to extend his streak. It came despite five shots on net, and while scoring in the shootout wouldn’t have counted towards the point, he did not get an opportunity in either of the Avs two attempts before the Rangers secured the victory by scoring on their first and third shots to clinch it.

Up until then, MacKinnon had registered at least a point in every home game for the Avalanche this season. In the 35 games prior, he had 29 goals and 48 assists for 77 points, which on it’s own would have been a 180-point pace over an 82 game season.

MacKinnon has seen scoring drop a bit more on the road with 16 goals and 30 assists for 46 points in 37 games away from Ball Arena, but that’s still a scoring pace most players would take. In total, that gives MacKinnon 45 goals, 78 assists and 123 points in 73 games this season, which is not only already well past his previous career-high of 111 established in 2022-23, but also has him a point behind Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov for the scoring lead.

MacKinnon isn’t the only Avalanche player seeing his play improve on home ice, as the team as a whole has performed very well at Ball Arena this season. The Avs have a 28-7-1 record at home, which is the most wins and points at home out of any team this season.
