Carolina Hurricanes Place Three on Waivers
Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Hurricanes will take on the Montreal Canadiens tonight and are coming off a loss to the Winnipeg Jets 5-3 on Saturday. The Hurricanes are currently in second place in the Metropolitan Division and trail the New York Rangers for first place by six points; the Hurricanes also have a game in hand on the Rangers. Today Carolina placed three players on waivers Forward Brendan Lemieux, Defenseman Tony DeAngelo, and Goalie Antti Raanta.

Hurricanes Waivers By The Numbers

Brendan Lemieux

Lemieux signed with the Hurricanes on July 2023 to a one-year contract. This season with Carolina he has played in 23 games and he recorded only three points on two goals and an assist; he is a minus-two. Lemieux this season has recorded 50 minutes but primarily has been a healthy scratch for them.

Tony DeAngelo

DeAngelo signed a one-year contract with Carolina on July 24th. He has played in 27 games and has recorded ten points on three goals and seven assists; he is a minus-seven. DeAngelo has also appeared on the power play and has six points on two goals and four assists. The Hurricanes have depth on the blue line so placing DeAngelo on waivers just seemed to make sense for this team.

Antti Raanta

Raanta re-signed with Carolina this past offseason after spending the last two seasons with the Hurricanes. This season he has played in 24 games starting 20 of them going 12-7-2 with a 2.99 GAA and an .872 save percentage and on shutout. The Hurricanes currently have Pyotr Kochetkov and Spencer Martin which may have made Raanta expendable. Since Martin joined the Hurricanes he’s made five starts and is 4-0-1 with a 1.97 GAA and a .922 save percentage.

Wrap Up

With all these moves and the NHL trade deadline tomorrow could there be a move coming that helps Carolina in their chase for a Stanley Cup? The Hurricanes have been unable to get over the hump to return to the Stanley Cup Finals, they’ve made the playoffs five straight seasons and have lost twice in the Eastern Conference Finals in two of those appearances. This will be an interesting 24 hours to see what happens with the three players who have been placed on waivers.
