Capitals sign goaltender Darcy Kuemper to five-year, $26.25 million contract

The Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche lost their starting goaltender on the first day of NHL free agency, as expected after the Avs acquired Alexandar Georgiev from the New York Rangers.

Less than 30 minutes after announcing the addition of Kuemper, the Capitals' Twitter account indicated that Washington signed another netminder as well.

Kuemper posted a 37-12-4 mark across 57 games in the regular season during his lone year with Colorado before going 10-4-0 in 16 games during the team's run to the title. Kuemper's .921 save percentage was fifth-best in the league during the regular season, and his five shutouts placed him fourth.

"Darcy is an established starting netminder who proved that he can win on the game's biggest stage, and we are excited to welcome him to Washington," senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan said. "We feel this signing will provide our team confidence and stability in net."

Lindgren played in five games for the St. Louis Blues last season (making four starts) and posted a 5-0-0 record. He collected 113 saves against just five goals allowed.
