Capitals Make First Cuts, Trim Roster To 51

The Washington Capitals announced their first cuts of the 2023 preseason, one day after falling to the Buffalo Sabres in the team’s preseason opener.

The cuts, which consist of eight forwards, three defensemen and one goalie, bring the 63-man roster down to 51.

Here’s the full list of cuts:

Forwards: Jimmy Huntington, Brett Hyland, Jake Karabela, Julian Napravnik, Garrett Roe, Matthew Strome, Patrick Thomas, Mike Vecchione.

Defensemen: Michael Kim, Benton Maass, Colin Swoyer

Goalies: Antoine Keller

Hyland, Karabela, Thomas and Keller are headed to their junior teams, while Huntington, Napravnik, Roe, Strome, Vecchione, Kim, Maass and Swoyer are headed to Hershey Bears training camp.

After Monday’s off day, the Capitals return to MedStar Capitals Iceplex for training camp on Tuesday and Wednesday. The team will host Detroit on Thursday at Capital One Arena in the team’s second preseason matchup.
