Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

Detroit Red Wings assistant coach Alex Tanguay, who handles the team’s power play, has been selected to be an assistant coach for  Canada at the upcoming World Championships.

Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman is the associate general manager of the Canadian team.  St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong is Canada’s general manager.

Ottawa Senators coach D.J. Smith will join Tanguay as an assistant coach.

Team USA will name its coaching staff and Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde is expected to named as an assistant coach. Lalonde has a strong reputation within the USA Hockey community.

David Quinn of the San Jose Sharks seems to be line to be head coach. Highly respected Arizona Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny will be Canada’s head coach.

The World Championships will be played in Tampere, Finland and Riga, Latvia, May 12-28. Canada won a silver medal last season and USA was fourth.

It’s unknown which Detroit players will be playing in the World Championship, although it’s clear that several will be invited. Germany for sure will want Moritz Seider and defending champion Finland should want Olli Maatta. USA will want Dylan Larkin, but he was dealing with an injury late in the season. Plus, he’s getting married this summer. Czechia will  want Dominik Kubalik. The Czechs won the bronze last year. Sweden should want Lucas Raymond.
