Boston Bruins sign Parker Wotherspoon to one-year, $800k extension

According to a report from Darren Dreger, the Boston Bruins announced this morning that they have signed defenseman Parker Wotherspoon to a one-year, $800,000 extension beginning in the 2024-25 season.

The 26-year-old has six assists and 23 penalty minutes in 32 games this season with Boston. Wotherspoon fought Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bertuzzi during Thursday night’s chaotic 4-1 victory. Wotherspoon signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Bruins back in the fall that has a cap hit of $775,000 and has earned himself a right to stay in Boston.

The Surrey, British Columbia product was originally selected in the fourth round, No. 112 overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders. He made his American Hockey League debut for the Bridgeport Islanders in 2015-16 while also playing for the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Wotherspoon was named to the WHL second All-Star team in the 2016-17 campaign after notching 10 goals and 56 assists for 66 points in 69 games with Tri-City. He recorded 150 assists and 182 points over parts of five seasons with the Americans. Wotherspoon found a regular role in Bridgeport’s lineup the following season and during the 2019-20 season, he had 27 points in 62 games, his highest point production at the pro level.

Wotherspoon made his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season with New York, appearing in 12 games and registering one assist.

Boston sits second in the Atlantic Division with a 37-13-15 record and 89 points through 65 games. They trail one point back of the first-place Florida Panthers from taking over the top spot in the Eastern Conference and sit tied league-wide for first place with the Panthers and the Vancouver Canucks.
