Arizona Coyotes re-sign Matias Maccelli and Tampa Bay Lightning re-sign Tanner Jeannot

The Arizona Coyotes re-signed forward Matias Maccelli to a three-year contract extension worth $3.425 million AAV on Sunday.

Maccelli shocked the Coyotes organization last season, scoring 11 goals and 49 points in his rookie year. His performance throughout the year helped him secure the fourth spot in Calder Trophy voting, as well as helping grant him a spot on the NHL’s All-Rookie Team for 2022-23.

The Turku, Finland native, was initially selected in the fourth round, 98th overall in 2019, the second and final year of his draft eligibility after being passed on his first year.

After touching down in North America in 2021-22, Maccelli scored 14 goals and 57 points in 47 games with the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners. That same year the forward made his NHL debut on March 9th, 2022, against the Colorado Avalanche; one game later, he’d find the back of the net to score his first NHL goal against the Ottawa Senators.

According to (Craig) Morgan, Maccelli’s contract carries a $3.425 million average annual value. He’ll be paid $3 million in 2023–24, $3.025 million in 2024–25, and $4.25 million in 2025–26.

When Maccelli’s contract expires in 2026, he’ll be 25 — two years away from unrestricted free agency — and eligible to become a restricted free agent with arbitration rights. He’ll be due a one-year qualifying offer worth $4.11 million.

Tampa Bay Lightning re-sign forward Tanner Jeannot

Not only did Canadian hockey fans celebrate Canada Day on July 1st, but fans from all over celebrated the start of NHL free agency. Over the past 16 days, over 150 players have signed deals with new teams, but some free agents stick close to their previous teams, such as Tanner Jeannot.

On Saturday evening, the Lightning announced they had re-signed the restricted free agent to a two-year contract extension. Jeannot’s new deal carries a $2.665 million cap hit through the 2024-25 season, giving him eligibility to become an unrestricted free agent.

Jeannot was coming off his freshman season in 2021-22 with the Predators, where he scored 24 goals and 41 points.

This past season the Lightning acquired Jeannot in a trade with the Nashville Predators on February 26th, 2023. In exchange, Nashville received a first-round pick in 2025, a second-round pick in 2024, third and fourth-round picks in 2023, and defenceman Callan Foote.

The forward scored six goals and 18 points in 76 games split between the Predators and the Lightning but did not record any points throughout Tampa Bay’s three playoff games this season.

There’s plenty to be expected from the six-foot-two forward who is described as a rough-and-tumble winger this upcoming season in his first full year with the Lightning.

The Lightning had been scheduled to go to a salary arbitration hearing with Jeannot on July 24.

With Jeannot now under contract through 2025, the Lightning have just one RFA left to sign this summer: Simon Ryfors, a five-foot-ten forward who scored 59 points in 72 games as a 25-year-old with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch in 2022–23.
