Why the Steelers should sign this former first-round LB

The Steelers have revamped their inside linebacker room this offseason but here are three reasons why they shouldn't be done adding to it with former first-round LB Reuben Foster still available.

New team, same city

Foster just wrapped up his first season in theĀ United States Football League after his Pittsburgh Maulers lost to the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL championship game on Saturday.

The 29-year-old finished the season with 52 tackles, one interception and 0.5 sacks while showing off his athleticism that once made him a first-round pick. Some believe his absence from the NFL is soon coming to an end.

Former Steelers LB Vince Williams recently tweeted, "Yeah he's going to end up playing for the other Pittsburgh football team."

The missing piece

Pittsburgh already signed linebackers Cole Holcomb, Elandon Roberts, Nick Kwiatkoski and Tanner Muse this offseason, but adding Foster would make sense as the team is still missing an athletic linebacker. The 6-foot, 229-pound linebacker ran a 4.6-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine.

NFL.com wrote, "His newfound speed and agility, while keeping his trademark aggression and instincts, made him a unanimous first-team All-American and All-SEC pick."

Foster may not have the same speed and agility he had as a rookie, but he would still bring a different type of play to the Steelers at linebacker.

Low risk, high reward

Foster was drafted 31st overall by the 49ers in the 2017 NFL Draft, but injuries derailed his professional career. He's looking for his second chance and he certainly deserves it.

Foster would still have to prove himself in training camp to make the 53-man roster, but he's certainly done enough to make an NFL roster this summer and it would be a low-risk, high-reward signing as his first-round caliber talent would come at a cheap price.
