Watch: Browns' David Njoku Makes Appearance At Local High School Fundraiser
USA TODAY Sports

It hasn't always been smooth sailing for David Njoku in Cleveland.

Since being draft by the Browns in the first round in 2017, he suffered through a miserable 0-17 season his rookie year and watched the coaching staff get turned over twice all before beginning his fourth year in the league.

It's been well documented that he didn't necessarily see eye-to-eye with head coach Kevin Stefanski when he took over in 2020. That led to the Miami product requesting a trade that offseason. The Browns brass didn't grand it however, stuck with Njoku, smoothed things over and helped develop him into one of the best tight ends in the game.

Now, Njoku has embraced the city, the fan base and Northeast Ohio and continues to find ways to ingrain himself in the local community.

For his latest act, the 27-year-old made an appearance at a St. Ignatius basketball game on Friday night as part of a scholarship event. His entrance into Sullivan Gym where the Wildcats play their home games was met with thunderous applause as the entire arena rose to their feet.

Njoku was in attendance as the school's "guest scholarship drive ticket puller." Each year, St. Ignatius conducts a fundraiser geared at providing scholarship funds to students, a tradition that dates back to 1939.

The first iteration of the event was a Bingo Night in 1938 that featured a ten-cent raffle offering a $1,000 prize. It was a raging success and the drive quickly became a staple event for a school sanctioned organizations known as the Fathers' Club. The event has taken different forms over the years and now offers a grand prize of $50,000 to help a student attend St. Ignatius. There are additional prizes of $10,000 and $5,000 rewarded as well.
