Waiving of fumble-prone Melvin Gordon could be signal for Broncos' offense

The Broncos have waived fumble-prone running back Melvin Gordon III, per NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, a possible signal Denver will draft a RB high in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Latavius Murray and Marlon Mack are the only running backs left on the active roster.

RB Javonte Williams is recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 4, and Chase Edmonds sprained his ankle in Sunday's loss to the Raiders and will miss multiple games, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

In the early rounds of the draft, the Broncos have a first-rounder (via the 49ers through the Dolphins in the Bradley Chubb trade) and two third-rounders. Per Tankathon, the first-round pick currently sits at No. 20.

Some of the top college running backs include Texas' Bijan Robinson, Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs and Michigan's Blake Corum. Robinson and Gibbs are projected as first-round picks and could be available in the area of Denver's first selection.

Gordon III, a two-time Pro Bowler with the Chargers, struggled with fumbles throughout his tenure in Denver. In three seasons, he fumbled 12 times, nearly matching his total in the first six seasons on the Chargers (14 fumbles). Gordon leads the league in fumbles (five) this season.

In Sunday's 22-16 overtime loss, Gordon fumbled in the red zone on third down at the end of the second quarter. Denver recovered, but it was a blown opportunity because the Broncos failed to increase their lead.

The fumbles doomed Gordon III, but he showed flashes of elite RB status. He rushed for more than 900 yards in consecutive seasons despite splitting time with Phillip Lindsay and Williams. He scored 20 touchdowns in Denver.

Per Pelissero, a team that claims Gordon will be responsible for the rest of his one-year, $2.25 million guaranteed contract.
