Vikings coaching staff news and rumors: Mike Pettine, Patrick Hill
USA TODAY Sports

Here's the latest news and buzz on the Vikings' 2023 coaching staff.

Mike Pettine to Philly?

Vikings assistant head coach Mike Pettine could be headed to the Eagles this offseason, according to Philadelphia insider Geoff Mosher.

The Eagles just hired Sean Desai — a Vikings DC candidate in each of the last two years — as their defensive coordinator, and Pettine was a senior defensive assistant with the Bears in 2021 when Desai was Chicago's DC. The Eagles have a vacancy at linebackers coach after losing Nick Rallis to the Cardinals, so perhaps Pettine would coach LBs there in addition to some sort of senior title.

Pettine interviewed for the Vikings' defensive coordinator vacancy, but the job eventually went to Brian Flores. He was hired by Kevin O'Connell last year to help out the first-year head coach in a variety of ways. Pettine was the Jets' DC when O'Connell was a player there, and he then gave O'Connell his first coaching job when Pettine was the head coach of the Browns in 2015.

Vikings hiring Patrick Hill as assistant DL coach

The Vikings are expected to hire Patrick Hill as their assistant defensive line coach, according to Matt Zenitz of On3. He'll replace A'Lique Terry, who was hired as Oregon's offensive line coach.

Hill was hired in January to be Colorado's defensive tackles coach under new head coach Deion Sanders, but now the Vikings are swooping in to poach him. Hill was most recently a defensive analyst at LSU in 2022. Prior to that, he made numerous stops at lower levels of college football.
