Two 49ers Assistant Coaches Interview for Saints Vacant OC Job
USA TODAY Sports

The 49ers could lose more assistants from their coaching staff this offseason.

Both quarterbacks coach Brian Griese and passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak have interviewed for the New Orleans Saints' vacant offensive coordinator position, according to Nick Underhill. Which means the 49ers won't lose both, but one of them could be gone soon.

Griese has been the 49ers' quarterbacks coach since 2022 and has been instrumental in the development of Brock Purdy. Kubiak is in his first season as the 49ers' passing game coordinator, but he previously coached for the Broncos and the Vikings. Neither coach ever has called plays.

Still, it's obvious why they're in demand -- they work under Kyle Shanahan. And with the exception of Mike LaFleur, all of Kyle Shanahan's disciples have gone on to have success without him. We're talking Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, Mike McDaniel and Bobby Slowik. Griese or Kubiak could be the next successful offensive coordinator Shanahan has produced.

If a team would hire 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks to be head coach this offseason, I'd imagine he'd take Griese or Kubiak with him to be his offensive coordinator, but it doesn't seem Wilks will land a head coaching job despite interviewing with the Chargers and the Falcons.

Griese and Kubiak have to decide how much job security Saints head coach Dennis Allen has. Because if they join his staff and he gets fired in a year, they'll all be out of jobs.

I'm guessing the 49ers will keep Griese and Kubiak for one more year.
