Three reasons Steelers' reunion with LB Myles Jack was necessary

The Steelers signed veteran LB Myles Jack on Monday after parting ways with him this past offseason. Here are three reasons why a reunion was necessary.

Thin room

Pittsburgh has seen some major injuries to its inside linebacker room over the past couple of weeks. Linebackers Kwon Alexander (torn Achilles) and Cole Holcomb (knee) both suffered season-ending injuries, leaving just Elandon Roberts as the lone veteran remaining.

Jack provides some much-needed depth and experience to the group, joining former fourth-round LB Mykal Walker and former seventh-round LB Mark Robinson. It would be surprising if Jack doesn't work his way into a starting role over the next few weeks.

Tackle machine

Jack has posted three straight 100+ tackle seasons from 2020-22. He hasn't forced any turnovers the past two years, but he has a knack of finding whoever has the ball, which can be just as important. The former second-round pick by the Jaguars in 2016 was one of the most dynamic linebackers and is surely looking to prove he still has some gas left in the tank after retiring earlier this season.

The Steelers have several other playmakers on their defense who can get takeaways, such as linebackers T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Jack just needs to do what he does best and find the ball.

Knowledge of system

Jack played for Pittsburgh last season and was arguably the best linebacker of the group. That's why it was surprising when the team decided to move on from him this past offseason. However, it seems like it was a cap-savings move more than anything.

That's why a reunion makes sense. The Steelers get Jack back at a much cheaper price and he already knows how to run the defense's scheme. It's a low-risk, high-reward signing that benefits both sides.
