Three free agents the Giants could sign ahead of training camp

The New York Giants are holding tryouts this week as they search for depth to add ahead of training camp. There are still some talented free agents available that the Giants could sign to fortify their roster and add competition to their lineup as camp kicks off next week.

The Giants could add depth at LG with Justin Pugh

One of New York's most intriguing position battles this summer will be at left guard. Second-year lineman Joshua Ezeudu will compete with veteran Ben Bredeson for the starting gig. But the Giants could afford to add some depth to the position and a familiar face might be a good fit for that role.

Pugh is still available as a free agent and would be a positive signing to add depth and compete for the Giants' left guard position. He was drafted by the Giants in 2013 but has spent the past five seasons of his career with the Arizona Cardinals.

Pugh made 56 starts for the Cardinals since 2018, but his 2022 season ended early as the veteran suffered a torn ACL in October. He recently took to Twitter to update fans on his health, writing that his "ACL recovery is going great." A reunion could make sense for both parties as the Giants need offensive line depth and Pugh could benefit from signing with a team that has an open competition at left guard.

Could the Giants circle back around for Deion Jones?

Starting LB Jarrad Davis underwent knee surgery and is out indefinitely. This loss leaves the Giants thin at the No. 2 LB spot that was being contended for by Davis, Micah McFadden and Darrian Beavers.

The Giants brought Jones in for a visit earlier this offseason, but ultimately chose not to sign him. With Davis now injured, New York could circle back around for Jones and add him as a camp body this summer.

Jones, 28, played in 11 games and made five starts for the Cleveland Browns in 2022, totaling 44 combined tackles, six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Jones may not be the same player he was when he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2017, but he could still provide some quality depth to the Giants' thin linebacker corps in 2023.

A veteran pass-rusher to bolster the defense

The Giants could reunite EDGE Justin Houston with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale to bolster their pass-rush this summer. Houston played for Martindale as a member of the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. That season, Houston had 4.5 sacks and 34 combined tackles in 15 starts.

Despite being 34, Houston is still a productive defender. He posted 9.5 sacks in 14 games for the Ravens in 2022. Beyond their star pass-rushers Kayvon Thibodeaux and Azeez Ojulari, the Giants lack depth on the edge. Houston could seamlessly fit back into Martindale's defensive scheme, adding some talent and experience to New York's pass-rush department.
