The Bears Almost Hired Dan Quinn Instead Of John Fox

In four years with the Broncos, Fox led them to an 8-8 season, followed by back-to-back 13-3 years, and ending with a 12-4 season in 2014. He took Denver to one Super Bowl and helped Peyton Manning lead one of the most electric modern offenses. In 2013 alone, Manning threw for over 5,400 yards and 55 touchdowns.

Ryan Pace, George McCaskey, Ted Phillips and the Issue

Pace got on board with the John Fox hire and you can’t entirely blame him for that. Fox’s resume was a clean and shiny brand-new toy for Pace to play with on Christmas morning. He never held a GM position before, and standing up to his superiors is a move that he didn’t have the courage to make.

If Pace did that and hired Dan Quinn, the story could have been different. We’ll never know how it could have changed Bears’ history, but it shines a light on a very specific issue.

The root issue here is George McCaskey and Ted Phillips. This isn’t just pandering to the “sell the team” crowd either because that just will not happen. The issue stems from them giving any kind of input in what the Bears do as a football team. Neither is qualified to do so and they’ve denied it time and time again. If they’re trying to play ‘fantasy football’ then they need to rid themselves of day-to-day operations. They should have let Pace just do his damn job.

At this point, until ownership can put some distance between themselves and Halas Hall, the Bears aren’t ever going to change.
