According to Hub Arkush, an NFL insider for 670 The Score, the Chicago Bears almost hired Dan Quinn. When the Bears hired Ryan Pace as general manager, he reportedly had a verbal agreement with Quinn to become Chicago’s next head coach. Apparently, when John Fox became available, George McCaskey and Ted Phillips talked Pace into hiring Fox. The Bears’ front office was under the advisement of Ernie Accorsi at the time, who was good friends with John Fox.

Dan Quinn was with the Seattle Seahawks at the time of their run to Super Bowl XLIX. The rules in 2014-15 stated that any team inquiring about coaches still alive in the playoffs required permission from the coach’s organization to do so. Obviously, with Quinn in preparation for the big game, the Bears chose to fill their needs with Fox instead of being patient.

The Bears Made the Right Choice in John Fox

At the time, John Fox was coming off a 12-4 season with the Denver Broncos but failed to get a playoff win. That shortcoming splintered the relationship between Fox and Denver GM John Elway. The two mutually agreed to part ways, leading to Fox finding a new home in Chicago.

In four years with the Broncos, Fox led them to an 8-8 season, followed by back-to-back 13-3 years, and ending with a 12-4 season in 2014. He took Denver to one Super Bowl and helped Peyton Manning lead one of the most electric modern offenses. In 2013 alone, Manning threw for over 5,400 yards and 55 touchdowns.

Ryan Pace, George McCaskey, Ted Phillips and the Issue

Pace got on board with the John Fox hire and you can’t entirely blame him for that. Fox’s resume was a clean and shiny brand-new toy for Pace to play with on Christmas morning. He never held a GM position before, and standing up to his superiors is a move that he didn’t have the courage to make.

If Pace did that and hired Dan Quinn, the story could have been different. We’ll never know how it could have changed Bears’ history, but it shines a light on a very specific issue.

The root issue here is George McCaskey and Ted Phillips. This isn’t just pandering to the “sell the team” crowd either because that just will not happen. The issue stems from them giving any kind of input in what the Bears do as a football team. Neither is qualified to do so and they’ve denied it time and time again. If they’re trying to play ‘fantasy football’ then they need to rid themselves of day-to-day operations. They should have let Pace just do his damn job.

If what Hub Arkush said on 670 The Score is true, then this organization has reached a new low. They’ve hidden behind smokey answers to questions for years and these comments prove what many have thought. The Bears could very well be the farcical embarrassment that many fans feel they are.

At this point, until ownership can put some distance between themselves and Halas Hall, the Bears aren’t ever going to change.
