Takeaways from the Bills' dominant win over the Steelers

The Buffalo Bills defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-17 in Monday's first wild-card round matchup.

The Bills dominated from the start to finish, building a 21-0 lead in the second quarter. The Steelers found some positivity, but it was never enough to mount a full comeback.

Here are the key takeaways from Buffalo’s wild-card win:

Bills can beat anyone when QB Josh Allen is turnover-free: Allen played nearly perfect, completing 21-of-30 for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 74 yards and a touchdown on the ground, including a 52-yard rushing touchdown midway through the second quarter.

It hasn't been perfect all season for Allen, however. The sixth-year quarterback threw the second most interceptions in the league (18). But if Allen continues to protect the ball like he did this week, the Bills will always have a chance to win.

It's time for a fresh start in Pittsburgh: Mike Tomlin is still one of the best head coaches in the NFL and he proved that by increasing his consecutive non-losing seasons streak to 17 this season. But sometimes a fresh start is needed for both sides and the Steelers should strongly consider that this offseason.

The league saw a similar scenario play out between Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles a little over 10 years ago with both finding success since parting ways. The Steelers could become the next example and they may even be able to get a draft pick or two if they want to trade him instead.

Injuries continue to mount for Buffalo: Key players WR Gabe Davis (knee) and CB Rasul Douglas (knee) were both inactive for Monday's wild-card matchup. But they will be joined by a couple more players on the injury report this week.

LB Terrell Bernard was carted off the field with a right foot/ankle injury and was quickly ruled out. He led the team in tackles (143) and added 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for a loss, three interceptions and five passes defensed on the year.

While CB Taron Johnson, who had 98 tackles, eight passes defensed and three forced fumbles, was also evaluated for a head injury during the contest.

If any are unable to play next week, it will certainly be a blow to the team's chances to win.

Steelers' playoff defense has been bad for a long time: Pittsburgh has now lost five straight playoff games and a big reason why has been the struggling play by its defense. The Steelers have allowed 202 points (40.4 points per game) in their last five postseason games.

It's surprising because the team prides itself on having one of the best defenses in the NFL led by Tomlin, who is a defensive-minded coach. But that has been a clear weak spot in the playoffs, and something must change. Maybe the answer is parting ways with some of its aging veterans this offseason.

Will they finally get revenge?: Buffalo will now host the Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs on Sunday night. But if history repeats itself, the Bills' playoff run will be short-lived once again as they are 0-2 against Kansas City in the postseason since in 2018.

There is a big difference this time around, however. Buffalo gets home-field advantage, which has proven to be a factor in the wild-card round. Four of the five teams who won this weekend were the home team.

Only time will tell if Allen and the Bills will finally get their revenge, but they surely seem set up to do it better than ever this year.
