Super Bowl coach could be in line for significant raise

While speculation over the future of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has risen lately, one insider believes the multiple-time Super Bowl winner won't only return next season but sign a contract extension with a significant pay bump.

According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, sources say they'd be "very surprised" if Reid hung it up after the season, win or lose, in Super Bowl LVIII. Additionally, he could see the Chiefs giving Reid a contract extension to catch up with the market after Sean Payton and Jim Harbaugh signed deals rumored to pay them salaries of $17 million and $16 million, respectively.

"My understanding is that Reid makes something in the range of $12 million per year," Graziano wrote. "It would certainly be tough to blame Reid if he didn't believe he should be the third-highest-paid coach in his division."

Reid signed a contract extension through 2025 in 2017, but it's clear he's earned a raise, especially considering the recent inflation in coaching salaries.

While a contract shouldn't be hard to agree upon between the two sides, what's still unknown is Reid's motivation to coach. At 65, he's checked off nearly every achievement possible and may have nothing left to prove, especially if the Chiefs go back-to-back. Why not go out on top?

Reid hasn't indicated he plans to retire anytime soon but hasn't denied it either.

When asked about his plans for after the season during a recent press conference, Reid deflected the question with humor while stating that his only focus was winning the Super Bowl.

"I haven't even thought about that," Reid said. "I figured that would come up when you guys were asking questions because I'm old -- but not that old."
