PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers announce they are placing inside linebacker Cole Holcomb on Injured Reserve while also activating running back Anthony McFarland to the 53-man roster.
Holcomb, who signed with the team this offseason, suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 9 against the Tennessee Titans. He’ll undergo surgery and is expected to make a full recovery for next year.
Kwon Alexander and Elandon Roberts will start in his place, with Mark Robinson providing depth. Mykal Walker could be an option to be elevated from the practice squad.
McFarland returns after being placed on IR just before Week 2 due to a knee injury. He returns on the deadline of his 21-day return window.
McFarland should be expected to return to his role as the team's kick returner, but could face competition if the Steelers decide to keep Godwin Igwebuike. In Week 1, McFarland fielded three kicks for 94 yards with a long of 34 yards.
