Steelers’ Antonio Brown Breaking Down While Speaking About Mike Tomlin: 'That Meant A Lot To Me'
Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver, Antonio Brown showcased one of the most remarkable runs in NFL history in terms of on-field production. While his off-field actions have often dominated headlines, Brown's impact during his tenure in Pittsburgh remains undeniable.

Drafted by the Steelers in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft, Brown spent nine seasons with the team, amassing an impressive 837 receptions, totaling 11,207 receiving yards, and scoring 74 touchdowns. He earned Pro Bowl honors seven times and was named an All-Pro four times. Despite his on-field achievements, Brown's departure from the Steelers left many fans disheartened, tarnishing their once-favorable view of the beloved player.

Recently, Brown appeared on Jason Whitlock's Fearless podcast, where he went into various controversial topics. Amidst discussions about his tumultuous journey, Brown became visibly emotional when reminiscing about his time under former coach Mike Tomlin.

"Mike Tomlin… that dude was like my pops, to be honest. Ever since I met Mike Tomlin, I always knew, I'll have success. I feel like when I went to the Steelers, Mike Tomlin, once I saw him and talked with him, I knew I was going to the Steelers. Mike Tomlin was that father figure for me. Outside of coach. Obviously as a coach and the minutia as a coach, he was always challenging me at the utmost to make sure I was better, but he was that guy who was always there for me mentally.”

Brown's departure from Pittsburgh left a sour taste, marked by public criticisms of the organization and some of his teammates. However, it seems that his sentiments have evolved since then, particularly regarding his former quarterback and Steelers icon, Ben Roethlisberger. In a notable shift, Brown has expressed admiration for Roethlisberger and has spoken highly of him.

Additionally, his emotional response when discussing his former coach, Tomlin, underscores the enduring bond and affection he holds for him, whom he regards as both a mentor and father figure. Brown's continued reflections on his relationship with Tomlin further illuminate the depth of their connection and the lasting impact of their time together in Pittsburgh.

“He was a guy who always tried to talk to me about things, even when I didn’t understand them. ‘Like AB, I think you need to think about the way you celebrate these touchdowns because you are going to another level of your career.’ I didn’t understand what he meant sometimes, but that guy Mike Tomlin always had my back. Always believed in me so I am always indebted to Mike Tomlin, like he was one of those guys… and that meant a lot to me.”

Throughout his impressive 17-season tenure coaching the Steelers, Tomlin has navigated a myriad of personalities, with Brown presenting one of the more challenging dynamics to handle. Despite the difficulties, Tomlin adeptly managed Brown for several years, showcasing his exceptional coaching skills.

However, as Brown's behavior escalated, reaching a tipping point, Tomlin faced increasing challenges in managing his antics. Steelers fans should truly acknowledge and commend Tomlin for his skillful handling of Brown during his tenure in Pittsburgh, a testament to his leadership and coaching prowess.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Is A Leader First And Coach Second

Tomlin stands as one of the premier coaches in today's game, renowned not only for his strategic prowess, but also for his exceptional leadership qualities. Universally respected by those who have played under him, Tomlin's reputation as a mentor precedes him, with many aspiring players eager for the opportunity to be coached by him

Despite criticisms that he may lean too heavily into a "players' coach" approach, Tomlin's ability to effectively communicate with diverse personalities, such as Brown's, while maintaining respect, is commendable.

For many Steelers fans, the trajectory of Brown's tenure in Pittsburgh didn't end as ideally as it began. Nevertheless, hearing Brown speak warmly about Tomlin serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of Tomlin's leadership and the positive relationships he fosters with his players.
