Saints rookie RB coming for Alvin Kamara's job as NFL debut looms

New Orleans Saints running back Kendre Miller has yet to suit up for a regular-season NFL game in his young career. Yet, that is not to say the rookie third-round pick is short on confidence.

After missing the first two games of the season with a hamstring injury, the TCU product is expected to make his NFL debut on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. His return could not come at a better time for a hobbled Saints backfield. With Jamaal Williams set to miss time with a hamstring injury and Alvin Kamara continuing to serve his three-game suspension, Miller could be in line for a hefty workload in Week 3.

If given the opportunity to spearhead the Saints rushing attack, do not expect Miller to willingly concede the reins moving forward — even with Kamara set to return to action in Week 4.

"I don’t sit too well at backup," Miller told WWL Radio Sports after being drafted. "Even though I respect Kamara and everything he got for the Saints, and everything he did, but I’m coming for that No. 1.”

While you have to respect the confidence, as long as Kamara is available, he holds majority ownership of the backfield in New Orleans. Despite appearing in only 13 games last season, the five-time Pro Bowler touched the football 199 times more than the next closest Saints running back.

Kamara will remain a focal point in New Orleans' offense for the foreseeable future. Yet, that's not to say Miller won't stake claim to a prominent role. Kamara has always played his best football while operating as the 1A in a committee. In the three seasons where Kamara has reached double-digit touchdowns, he has combined for 13 fewer rushing attempts than his primary running back counterpart.

Despite Kamara's pending return, the Saints will still need a bulldozing back to lean on in the run game. That player was expected to be Williams, but don't be surprised if Miller challenges the veteran for the "Mark Ingram role" behind Kamara.

“I just want to see that violence that I know that he has, that he runs with,” quarterback Derek Carr said of Miller, via the team’s website. “I just can’t wait to see him put that on full display."
