Saints RB Alvin Kamara suspended three games for role in nightclub incident

The NFL announced on Friday that it has suspended New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara for the first three games of the 2023 season for his role in a Las Vegas nightclub fight in February of 2022.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Chris Lammons was also suspended three games for his role in the incident.

Kamara was initially arrested and booked for battery resulting in substantial bodily harm.

Police were called to a Las Vegas nightclub responding to a victim, Darnell Greene, that said he was battered at the club by Kamara.

The incident took place at an elevator when Kamara put his hands on Greene to stop him from entering the elevator. When Greene pushed Kamara's hands off of him, he reported that Kamara shoved him to the ground and that four people repeatedly hit and kicked him. Kamara was identified as one of those four people.

Kamara had been in Las Vegas at the time to participate in the Pro Bowl.

A surveillance video was obtained that backed up Greene's account.

Kamara eventually pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace. He served 30 hours of community service and had to pay Greene more than $100,000 in restitution. That plea allowed him to avoid felony charges and potential jail time.

He addressed the incident for the first time on Friday. From NFL.com:

"I never want to be involved in something where someone gets hurt or severely injured or anything. Poor judgment on my end. Definitely a bad decision," Kamara said prior to the news of his suspension. "I was completely wrong. I embarrassed the Saints, I embarrassed my family and my mother. I embarrassed myself, embarrassed the city, and the shield, obviously, embarrassed the NFL."

Kamara is one of the Saints' most impactful offensive stars and losing him for the first three games will definitely be a problem for their offense. He is coming off a 2022 season that saw him rush for 897 yards and catch 57 passes for another 490 yards. He also scored four touchdowns.

As much as that will hurt the Saints, three games still seems like a light punishment given the altercation and how video evidence backed up Greene's account of what happened. Kamara was not only fortunate to avoid jail time, but he is also fortunate to only miss three games.

He will miss games against Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers. He will be eligible to return on Oct. 1 for a big NFC South game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
