Ravens bring in former Pro Bowler, get insurance for oft-injured RB

The Baltimore Ravens added running back depth on Friday, agreeing to a one-year contract with veteran Melvin Gordon.

Though Gordon is coming off of a season where he played just 10 games and posted his lowest yards per carry (3.5) since his rookie year, the move is a wise one for Baltimore.

It's a low-risk deal and gives the roster needed experience in the backfield, while the 30-year-old is just two seasons removed from a 10-touchdown campaign (eight rushing, two receiving) where he posted 1,131 yards from scrimmage.

Of course, much of the rushing duties will continue to go through the legs of former MVP Lamar Jackson, and the Ravens are hopeful that starter J.K. Dobbins can finally put together a fully healthy season. Dobbins' career has been largely impacted by injuries thus far.

The Ohio State product gained 925 scrimmage yards in 15 games as a rookie in 2020 with 805 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 134 carries but missed all of 2021 after tearing his ACL, LCL, meniscus and hamstring during a preseason contest. Dobbins' lengthy rehab caused him to miss the first two games of the 2022 campaign and he later suffered a knee injury, which limited him to eight total contests last season.

Gus "The Bus" Edwards has been with Baltimore since 2018 and had three straight productive years with over 700 rushing yards and 10 scores on the ground, despite making only 13 starts. Edwards doesn't add a receiving element to the Ravens offense though and suffered a season-ending torn ACL just weeks after Dobbins in 2021. Edwards played nine games (four starts) in 2022.

Justice Hill has recorded 547 career rushing yards and two touchdowns on 119 carries since being drafted by Baltimore in 2019. Like Edwards though, he's not much of a threat as a receiver with just 25 catches for 148 scoreless yards over his 43 games. He also went down with a season-ending injury shortly before the 2021 campaign, suffering a torn Achilles.

Although Gordon is the oldest of the four players, he's been the most durable, suiting up for at least 10 games in all eight of his NFL seasons. The two-time Pro Bowler has also produced at least 25 receptions in each of his years in the league and has 14 career receiving scores.
