Pittsburgh Steelers elevate LB Myles Jack, safety Eric Rowe to active roster for Seahawks game
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

The Steelers really need bodies at both linebacker and safety as they try to keep their playoff hopes from fading away in Seattle.

That’s why Pittsburgh promoted linebacker Myles Jack and safety Eric Rowe to the active roster for the Steelers game against the Seahawks. The two veterans enjoyed excellent showings last Saturday in Pittsburgh’s key win over the Bengals. But no matter what happens in Seattle, the two revert back to the practice squad once they return back to Pittsburgh.

Jack, the former second-round choice of the Jacksonville Jaguars, actually retired this preseason. At the time, he was on the Eagles roster. The Steelers added him to the practice squad in November. Last Saturday against the Bengals, he registered six tackles with a sack. It was like old times. Jack was with the Steelers last year. The former UCLA star played in 15 games, starting 13. He led the team in tackles with 104, with 61 of them solo. The Steelers released him in the off season.

Pittsburgh defense needs healthy safeties

The 31-year-old Rowe, a former Utah standout, also was out of football since mid-September before the Steelers signed him in November. He’ll start against the Seahawks for the second straight game. The depth at safety is a huge concern for Pittsburgh. Patrick Peterson, a cornerback, will start at one safety spot. Rowe hit the first team after injuries to Minkah Fitzpatrick, Keanu Neal and Trenton Thompson. Fitzpatrick (knee) and Thompson (neck) are out for the Steelers game against the Seahawks. Neal still is on injured reserve.

Last Saturday, Rowe had an interception of Bengals quarterback Jake Browning.

Meanwhile, the Steelers are sticking with Mason Rudolph at quarterback. Pickett practiced this week, but was limited each day as he recovers from a high ankle sprain. Rudolph helped lead Pittsburgh to a win over the Bengals last Saturday. The quarterback threw for 290 yards and a pair of touchdowns. That included an 86-yarder to George Pickens on the Steelers second offensive snap of the game.

Here’s another stat in Rudolph’s favor. The 34 points scored by the Steelers were a season high. Plus, Pittsburgh hasn’t scored that many points in a victory since 2020.
