Patriots’ Jalen Mills admits Dak Prescott faces ‘too much heat’, blames Cowboys defense too for playoff loss to Packers
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Well, looks like not everyone holds Dak Prescott responsible for the Dallas Cowboys’ playoff loss as the New England Patriots Jalen Mills finally lent a hand of support to the quarterback, discouraging the criticisms he faced upon his team’s elimination from the Super Bowl LVIII race.

In a recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan, the Patriots’ safety illustrated his experience playing against Prescott and acknowledged the intense heat the quarterback had to go through when clearly the Cowboys’ defense was at fault as they failed on ball security.

Mills said when asked about his thoughts on whether Prescott received a lot of heat:

I think so, I think so. I watched that last playoff game versus Green Bay.. um I mean we always talk about ball security. I mean as a team.. any team should talk about ball security. You know, the life of the team whether it's on defense, you intercept the ball and you see some guys fumbling they give it right back to the offense or the offense turning over the ball with his interception or a fumble by a guy. Jalen Mills said

Though he acknowledged the responsibility of a quarterback in big games such as the playoffs, he also emphasized the fact that it’s the responsibility of the defense to take the pressure off the quarterback.

Dak Prescott’s Contract Extension Hopes Dashed by Cowboys’ Playoff Loss

There was a time before the playoffs when the entire NFL was talking about quarterback Prescott’s grand contract extension for leading the Cowboys to secure the playoff berth as the top NFC East team. However, it all faded away when the Cowboys lost in the very first game of the postseason, despite having a home-field advantage.

As he entered the final year of his contract, the franchise hasn’t shown any interest in a potential contract extension so far. As reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys haven’t had any “substantial talks” with Prescott for a long-term contract.

Additionally, there’s a highly unlikely scenario yet doable that the Cowboys may hit the reset button and use June 1 to cut all their ties with Prescott, ahead of the 2024 regular season. His salary cap hit is $59.5 million now but if he is released after June 1, Prescott would only be entitled to $36.5 million in dead money, leaving the Cowboys with a $29 million space in the salary cap.
