Patriots' Dont'a Hightower reportedly opting out of NFL season

Dont'a Hightower is reportedly opting out of the upcoming NFL season, making him the fourth player on the New England Patriots who has decided to skip football due to the coronavirus pandemic. The exact reason for Hightower's decision to opt out is not currently known, though it has been speculated it may be connected to him becoming a father earlier this month.

Hightower was drafted by the Patriots in the first round in 2012, and he has played all nine seasons of his career in New England. He has made two Pro Bowls with the team but is especially known for his elevated play in the postseason, with head coach Bill Belichick even giving him the nickname "Mr. February" due to his big-play ability in big games.

So far, the Patriots have been hit harder than anyone when it comes to players choosing not to participate in the 2020 season. Tackle Marcus Cannon, fullback Danny Vitale and reserve offensive lineman Najee Toran have all opted out, with running back Brandon Bolden reportedly considering joining his four teammates by passing on the upcoming season. Brothers Devin and Jason McCourty have also expressed their skepticism about the season being played without player safety being prioritized properly.

As the NFL heads into training camp, there is plenty of concern about how feasible an NFL season is right now, especially with the MLB experiencing its first coronavirus outbreak in its shortened season. If another month passes with the coronavirus showing no signs of slowing down, will more players choose not to play this year?
